Google Fiber in Kansas City officially announced

Google Fiber is a fiber network that provides 1Gb/sec throughput to residential homes. It promises to be 100x faster than any current US ISP and cheaper too. Google originally announced it would begin to sign up customers for its Google Fiber service by the end of 2011 and launch the service in early 2012, but the project has experienced some delays since then. The Google Fiber service will come with 1TB of free storage in Google Drive and no limits or overage charges.

Developer says that Android is designed for piracy

Recently we reported on an Android developer who decided to adopt a free to play model for his game after some high piracy rates. Now, another developer is saying that Android is designed for piracy. Matt Gemmell, an iOS and OS X developer, thinks that Android's piracy problem is because of the platform’s openness, and namely "the corrosive mentality that surrounds such openness."

Google introduces calculator for math search results

Google continues to improve its search engine by offering more things than just links to content. A new feature that was added this week is that Google now shows a calculator when you type in a math question, for example 5 + 2.

South Pole is on Street view

Google managed to bring Street View to many locations in Antarctica including the ceremonial South Pole and Telescope, with the help of the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust. But the company has gone one step further, providing you the ability to look inside both Shackleton's and Scott's huts which were used in the early 20th century by the explorers and have been preserved almost perfectly.

Google's Nexus 7 having issues with screen separation?

Google's Nexus 7 tablet (Made by ASUS)  has received good publicity since it was announced at Google’s I/O conference, and has strong sales. It sports a nVIDIA Tegra-3 chipset with a quad-core CPU and is priced at a quite cheap $199 (£159), despite the fact that it is more on the high-end side of tablets.

But now reports from some users say that their Nexus 7 devices have a screen that has a slight defect, which in turn causes it to separate from the bezel, or the device creaks when pressure is applied to the screen. Luckily, for those users, it can be fixed. There are screws on the back of the device that can be tightened to ensure the screen doesn’t move or come loose again.Check out this thread over at XDA-Developers if you’re one of the affected users.

New YouTube feature allows you to blur faces for privacy

YouTube announced at its YouTube blog on Wednesday that it is launching a new privacy related feature, one that allows users to blur out faces in videos with one click, protecting the identities of the people on them. Human rights concerns for people pictured in activist footage was a big motive in building this new feature, according to the blog post.

The feature doesn't offer users the ability to selectively blur out faces, but at least for now, it will automatically blur out all detected faces in the video. You can find the new option in the Video Enhancements tool under "Additional Features". All you have to do is click Apply for the Blur All Faces option. You will then see a preview of the modified video. The blog post warns that certain faces or frames might be missed, and recommends that users keep their videos private if the blurring is not satisfactory.The new blurring feature will be available to all users by the end of Wednesday.

Google's First Female Engineer is Yahoo!'s new CEO

Marissa Mayer, one of the company's first 20 employees, and its very first female engineer, has left the search engine giant to take the reigns of rival Yahoo.

Marissa Mayer quit her job with Google on Monday. The 37-year-old Stanford graduate signed on with Google back in 1999. Over the years her Google job titles have included Product Manger, Director of Consumer Web Services, VP of Search Products & User Experience, and VP of Local, Maps & Location Services.

Now she is taking the reigns of Yahoo as its new President and CEO. Mayer was one of Google's top executives, responsible for products like Google Maps, Google Earth, Street View, and more. She had also managed Google Search for years, and led development on other products such as iGoogle, Google News and Gmail.

Mayer said in a statement: "I am honored and delighted to lead Yahoo!, one of the Internet's premier destinations for more than 700 million users.  I look forward to working with the Company's dedicated employees to bring innovative products, content, and personalized experiences to users and advertisers all around the world."

Update:  Marissa Mayer announced that she is pregnant. She spoke exclusively to CNN and confirmed that she and her husband are expecting their first child, a boy, in October. She first disclosed her pregnancy to the Yahoo! board in late June during a meeting with Michael Wolf, a member of the board's CEO search committee. Meetings with the rest of the board followed and Mayer said the board didn't show concern about hiring a pregnant CEO. "They showed their evolved thinking," she told Fortune.

New Android malware found and removed on Google Play

Symantec has discovered a new piece of Android malware, that has since been removed from the Google Play store, that achieved between 50,000 and 100,000 downloads of malicious apps before being identified. The malware is known as Android.Dropdialer and it was posted on Google Play, packaged under names such as Super Mario Bros and GTA 3 Moscow City, on June 24. Google's Android Security division quickly pulled the malware program from Google Play after being alerted to the issue by Symantec.
Symantec thinks that the reason the malware wasn't discovered until a few weeks later was because it used an outside service to download the main package.

Symantec's blog states:

In the case of Android.Dropdialer, the first stage was posted on Google Play. Once installed, it would download an additional package, hosted on Dropbox, called ‘Activator.apk’. This additional package sends SMS messages to a premium-rate number. An interesting feature of the secondary payload is that it prompts to uninstall itself after sending out the premium SMS messages—an obvious attempt at hiding the true intent of the malicious app.

This newest malware discovery shows that people should be careful about downloading any app, even on authorized download services.
