Microsoft revealed its Q3 2012 financial numbers

Microsoft Corp. today announced its Q3 (calendar year) 2012 financial numbers, the company had revenues of $16.01 billion for the quarter than ended on September 30th. they had net income, and of $4.47 billion, and earnings of $0.53 per share.

New Android Developer Console By Google

Google releases the newest Android Developer Console. It was first shown at Google I/O earlier in the year, but since then, they've been testing it out with thousands of developers, reviewing their feedback and making adjustments. So now, everyone can try it.

Apple patents a game controller

Apple keeps increasing its patent portfolio, as they have now added one more patent relating to a game controller. The patent was filed in March this year and it has been published today. It describes a controller that looks pretty similar to Sony's line of controllers used with the PlayStation consoles.

Instagram increases its user base to 80 million

In April, when Facebook acquired Instagram, the company that made the popular photo sharing and effects app, for $1 billion, it only had 30 million registered users. On May 1st, Instagram said that that number had increased to 50 million users, thanks mostly to the Android app which came out just before Facebook bought the company.

Facebook now has 955 million worldwide users

Facebook has made its first financial announcement since becoming a public company in May. The social network said it now has 955 million users worldwide who sign on at least once a month, 54 million more comparing to a total of 901 million users which Facebook said it had in April.

Google Fiber in Kansas City officially announced

Google Fiber is a fiber network that provides 1Gb/sec throughput to residential homes. It promises to be 100x faster than any current US ISP and cheaper too. Google originally announced it would begin to sign up customers for its Google Fiber service by the end of 2011 and launch the service in early 2012, but the project has experienced some delays since then. The Google Fiber service will come with 1TB of free storage in Google Drive and no limits or overage charges.

Bittorrent Inc. testing new revenue stream: Spreading RealPlayer

According to the Bittorrent blog, the company is now testing a new way of generating revenue benefiting both themselves and the artists. Unfortunately that includes spreading the controversial software Realplayer. Erik Klinker, Bittorrent CEO, said on Bittorrent's blog that the company is trying "a new idea that could revolutionize the content business".  The idea is to release various types of media content to the Bittorrent network for free and to generate revenue by including a software offer from partners. Both Bittorrent Inc. and the artists get paid once the software is downloaded too.

Microsoft announces BUILD 2012 conference to be held on October 30 in Redmond

Microsoft has just announced that its BUILD conference will be held from October 30th to November 2nd at its home office in Redmond, Washington. The conference will be held just a week after Windows 8 his general availability. Microsoft will also have several other topics for the conference besides Windows 8, including Windows Phone 8, Windows Server 2012 and Visual Studio 2012.

Intel's Atom processors to get Android 4.1 support

According to a report from PCWorld,  Intel is currently porting Android 4.1, code-named Jelly Bean, to its Atom line of CPUs. So far very few Android smartphones have intel chips inside, and none of the are being sold in the US. Intel did not mention how long the porting process will take, nor when the Jelly Bean update will be released to Atom-based devices.

Netflix adds more than one million subscribers in Q2 2012

Netflix seems to be gaining more and more new members to its streaming video service. Today, the company announced that it has added more than one million new subscribers worldwide in the second quarter of 2012.

Comcast confirms new 305 Mbps service

Last week, there were rumors that Comcast would launch a new, faster internet service with download speeds of up to 305 Mbps. The company confirmed those plans today, along with speeds boosts for previously launched internet subscription plans.

Apple sold 26 million iPhones and 17 million iPads in Q2

Apple reported today that for the April-June quarter of 2012, it sold 26 million iPhones and 17 million iPads worldwide. According to the company's press release, Apple had revenues of $35.0 billion and a net profit of $8.8 billion for the quarter, compared to revenues of $28.6 billion and a net profit of $7.3 billion for the same time period a year ago.

AMD console chip executive departs for NVIDIA

The executive at AMD  responsible for getting the company's graphics chips inside the Xbox 360 and the Wii game consoles has now left the company. According to the Wall Street Journal, Bob Feldstein left the company on Friday and has come to work for NVIDIA this week, one of its biggest rivals.

Verizon and Redbox start testing their Netflix killer

In February, Verizon announced a partnership with DVD/Blu-Ray rental kiosk company Redbox. Their plan was to create a new streaming video service that would rival Netflix, the current king of streaming media. Now the next step in that partnership has been taken as testing of the service has begun.

The European Union has announced the start of thorough investigations against 13 different producers of optical disk drives (ODD), sending a “Statement of Objections” to what are considered “suspected participants in a cartel for the supply of computer CD and DVD drives” in the European Economic Area (EEA).

Apple loses against Galaxy Tab 10.1 but manages to ban 7.7 EU-wide

Apple recently accused Samsung that it's Galaxy Tab 10.1 looked a lot like an iPad, and a court in Germany sided with them, banning sales of the tablet in the country, forcing Samsung to redesign the product. The redesigned model, the Galaxy Tab 10.1N is now apparently not enough.

Samsung sells more than 10 million Galaxy S III phones

The Android 4.0 smartphone, which launched in Europe on May 29 and in the US in June has now sold more than 10 million units worldwide in less than two months. By contrast, the Galaxy S II took five months to reach the 10 million sales mark after its launch in May 2011. The sales came mostly from Europe and Asia though, as the US didn't get the Galaxy S II until September 2011.

Amazon planning to release 5 or 6 tablets?

A few weeks ago, it was rumored that Amazon was planning to come out with as many as four new versions of its Kindle Fire tablet device. Now the US head of the retail store chain Staples claims that the number of new tablet versions coming from Amazon could be even more that previously rumored.
