Developer says that Android is designed for piracy

Recently we reported on an Android developer who decided to adopt a free to play model for his game after some high piracy rates. Now, another developer is saying that Android is designed for piracy. Matt Gemmell, an iOS and OS X developer, thinks that Android's piracy problem is because of the platform’s openness, and namely "the corrosive mentality that surrounds such openness."

The problem, Matt says, is that it’s just too easy to steal apps. It’s only a matter of downloading the file from somewhere and dropping it into your device.

Here are three quotes, one from each section of Matt Gemmell's article:
  • "The system is designed for piracy from the ground up. The existence of piracy isn't a surprise, but rather an inevitability."
  • "Piracy isn't a symptom of social disease. Piracy is a symptom of failure to find an effective business model."
  • "Open is broken as a money-making platform model, unless you're making the OS or the handsets. Most of us aren't doing that."
Head over here to read Matt's entire article.
