NASA: project on Interplanetary Internet.

NASA did research on using Internet in distances more than the earths surface, including communication through spaceships and other planets.

To be more specific,NASA cooperating with the ESA, have been working on an experimental form of  Internet in a bigger scale, that can link up spaceships, probes, rovers and other planets in the long term. However since its impossible to experiment in such great scale, the research is done by attempting to control a portable mobile unit, from big distance.

So the American astronaut Sunita Williams succeeded controlling  a custom made Lego robot, at an ESA facility in Darmstadt through the ISS (International Space Station who is a habitable artificial satellite) expedition while she orbited over the area, proving that in the future, space explorers could control a vehicle on a planetary surface while staying out of the planet (but in orbit).

The experiment succeeded by using the Disruption-Tolerant Networking (DTN) system.

This is the habitable ISS which is in our Earths orbit:

Here is the fully customized lego robot that has been used for the research:

Imagine the potential of what that project can bring to future remote control and planet communication. Mars is already being tested for possible habitation.

So if Mars could be our second home, maybe this way of exchanging data, could be our way of communication with our planet Earth !
