Verizon sold 5.9 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2012

Verizon Wireless announced today its financial results for the second quarter of 2012. The company revealed that during Q2 it sold a total of 5.9 million smartphones, 2.7 million of which were iPhones and 2.9 million were Android-based devices. News.com says that 2.5 million of those Android smartphones will work on the company's 4G LTE network, showing that Verizon has succeded adter betting on its faster network infrastructure. Verizon has a much larger LTE network than AT&T or Sprint, while T-Mobile has yet to launch its own LTE network.

Verizon said it generated $28.6 billion in revenue in the second quarter, up 3.7 percent from the same period a year ago. Operating income came in at $5.7 billion, compared to $4.9 billion from a year ago. Verizon now has 88.8 million users.
